Duration: a full day (9AM-8PM)
Transportation: by train to reach Venice and then on foot
Program:
1- start from the train station,
2- Calatrava bridge,
3- Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari (visit),
4- Rialto bridge and stop in one of the renovated traditional Venitian bars "bacari" near the fish market (for a happy hour, venitian aperitif the "spritz con Aperol"),
5- calle of the Mercerie,
6- San Marco square: a) tower "The Campanile", open 9:30AM-3:30PM, ticket 6 euro;
7- Lunch: at the "Aciugheta" in campo San Filippo and Giacomo
8- San Marco square: b) Palazzo Ducale (or Ducal Palace), open 9AM-5PM, ticket 12 euro; Carneval's masks and shows in the square (see the Carneval's program on the website www.carnevale.venezia.it/)
9- Stop eat a Carneval Venitian fritter at the "Pasticceria" in Calle of the Albanesi (you cannot seat inside... but it's the best Venitian pasticceria and the most antique one)
10- San Marco square: Procuratie Nuove (gaze over from the square and walk underneath them),
11- Stop at the Florian cafe' for a coffee
12- From St. Marco square walk along Calle Larga 22 Marzo (there are fashion stores like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, etc...)
13- Stop at the Theatre La Fenice (you can see it from the outside but the best thing would be to reserve a guided tour going to www.teatrolafenice.it)
14- Reach the gondola-bus in Saint Toma' (50 cents)
15- Walk back to the Campo dei Frari (keep following the "stazione" signs...)
16- Ponte degli Scalzi
17- train station (stazione)
Lunch alternative: go to the tipical Venetian osteria in Campiello Remer, near the Rialto bridge, or at the Osteria Ale Do' Marie in Calle dell' Ogio, Castello area.
If you decide to stay for dinner and for the night Carneval shows I would suggest to have dinner in Saint/ Elena island: get on the waterbus in Saint Zaccaria (after the Whispers Bridge close to the Ducal Palace)stop at the Saint Elena stop and on foot reach the Diporto Velico for a fried seafood dinner at the Al Di Porto restaurant.
